As March arrives, the lingering winter chill echoes the political storms of recent weeks. Government threats to world order, to the federal workforce, to immigrants, to the marginalized, to DC’s home rule, and to our cultural institutions are not just national headlines: they affect our neighbors, our friends, and our community. The sudden, fierce federal policy changes are hitting close to home these days, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Our response must be to stay centered, clear-headed, and connected. We invite you to explore the resources in this newsletter, join our online and in-person gatherings, and consider becoming a volunteer to support neighbors who could use some assistance. I hope you will share the benefits of being part of our Village with your friends and loved ones because now — more than ever — we need each other.
This March, we offer a range of events to unite and inspire. Join us at Happy Hour at Jinya on March 6th for conversation and companionship. On Tuesday, March 11th, our field trip to the Renwick Gallery will explore the We Gather at the Edge exhibit honoring the Black story-quilt tradition. On March 13th, ERCV’s “Ask Our Social Worker” online session with Barbara Scott provides a safe space for insight and support. On the third Thursday of each month, come watch a first-run Senior Cinema film for $6.00 hosted by DC Villages at the Avalon Theatre. Finally, close out the month on its fourth Wednesday with our Lunch Bunch. This month we’ll be gathering at Yu Noodles in Silver Spring.
Let’s make March a month of connection, mutual support, activity, and hope. Together, we can press on through turbulent times while embracing the promise of a brighter season ahead. To paraphrase Oscar Hammerstein III: With hope in our hearts, we’ll never walk alone.
