While our city enjoys a slight reprieve from extreme heat and humidity, recent events have filled the air with excitement: within less than two weeks a presidential candidate was shot at; a national party held its presidential convention; the current President ended his bid for reelection and endorsed his Vice President to run in his stead; and the Summer Olympics kicked off in Paris.
These events remind us that life can be unpredictable, that we all have opportunities to make ill-considered or responsible choices, and that significant changes and moments of global importance can happen in rapid succession. They also underscore some of our country’s vulnerabilities and strengths while also highlighting that seemingly quaint ideal of a world putting aside hate and difference for the sake of competitive excellence and fair play. These events can foster the joy of coming together in good or difficult times, of celebrating achievements, and of being part of a united community, all values that resonate deeply here at ERCV.
August Activities
This month, we have a little something for everyone. On Thursday, August 8th, we invite you to join Shelley for some online bingo. It’s a chance for some fun and friendly Olympics-themed competition, and you’ll have a good shot at winning prizes! Later in the month, on August 22nd, our friend and neighbor, professional organizer Judy Tiger, will offer the online presentation “House Review: All About Papers.” This is sure to be of use for anyone looking to declutter and organize their space. To wrap up the month, come join us for a happy hour at Olive Lounge on Thursday, August 29th. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up, share stories, and enjoy each other’s company.
In between, we have our walks and a variety of exercise classes designed to help prevent falls and strengthen memory. And please don’t forget to put our annual Community Picnic on your calendar. It is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, September 22nd, in Rock Creek Park. Register now and watch for more details to come.
Health Tips
A quick health reminder: the summer remains hot, and COVID-19 is still circulating in our community. Please remember to stay hydrated and consider wearing a mask when in crowds or while traveling. Read the Health Updates section of this newsletter for helpful tips.
Remember, ERCV is all about neighbors helping neighbors. We are part of a larger movement dedicated to ensuring dignity and support as we age in the communities we love. Your participation and enthusiasm make our Village vibrant and strong.
Wishing you all an August filled with joy, connection, and new adventures.
