In January our nation bade farewell to former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away last year at the age of 100. His life was marked by humility, compassion, intelligence, and a deep commitment to serving others. Presidents’ Day is officially observed in February, yet last month brought two significant “Presidents’ Days”: President Carter’s funeral on January 9th followed eleven days later by the inauguration of President Trump. I believe President Carter’s values have much to teach us as Villagers and as citizens of the world. Whatever our individual political perspectives, those values can offer a guiding light, reminding us of the enduring importance of integrity, service, and kindness in uncertain times. Let us draw inspiration from his example as we navigate the turbulence ahead, remaining steadfast in the face of challenges and continuing to help one another in all the ways we can.
Winter’s unpredictable weather is still with us, and we urge everyone to be cautious. If you are a member who needs help spreading ice melt, picking up groceries or medication, or would like a friendly check-in call, please let us know. Our volunteers are ready to assist you.
February Events:
We have a nice lineup of events in February to keep us engaged and connected. I’m pleased to announce that starting this month East Rock Creek Village is joining with six other DC Villages to sponsor Senior Cinema at the Avalon Theatre on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 10:30 am for the next seven months. While we don’t know what films will be showing in the months ahead, tickets will be offered at a discount, and we’ll have a fine opportunity to go the movies with fellow DC Villagers.
I also hope you’ll join us on Thursday, February 6th, at 3:00 pm for another Happy Hour at Jinya. We’ll be celebrating Valentine’s Day early, on Thursday, February 13th, with Sweetheart Valentines Bingo, led by my sweetheart Shelley Moskowitz, with prizes of flowers and candy. On Saturday, February 15th, we’ll visit a juried art show and reception at Brookside Gardens, where three of our members have artwork on display. Finally, our Lunch Bunch, which will begin meeting regularly at noon on the fourth Wednesday of the month, will meet at Ledo Pizza on Wednesday, February 26th.
