David Mackoff, President

As September begins and we anticipate the cooler air and beauty of autumn, we celebrate Labor Day—our national tribute to hard work and dedication. East Rock Creek Village is volunteer-managed, and we rely on the dedication and efforts of our members, volunteers, and supporters. This month’s newsletter highlights key committees that are essential to our success. Joining a committee is a great way to make a difference, connect with others, and contribute to the growth and vibrancy of our Village. I invite you to read about these opportunities and consider where your talents and interests might fit.

FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK

The month of September also includes National Falls Prevention Awareness Week with its 2024 theme “From Awareness to Action.” While falls are not considered a normal part of aging, they are not uncommon, and there are effective steps we can take to reduce the risk. As you probably know, ERCV offers in-person fall prevention exercise classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Shepherd Park Library, plus online sessions on Fridays. These classes are designed to help participants build strength and enhance their balance. If you are interested for yourself or on behalf of someone you care about, I urge you to look into what we offer.

CONNECTIONS

September at ERCV isn’t just about preventing falls—it’s also about celebrating the season and our community. I’m happy to invite you to our Members’ Picnic on Sunday, September 22nd. This is an opportunity to spend time with our longtime members, to welcome new members, and to introduce ourselves to prospective members interested in learning more about ERCV. Food and drinks are on us, so come join and enjoy an afternoon of fun, laughter, and celebration.

Our Village derives strength from each one of us. Whether you’ve been with us for years or are just starting your journey with ERCV, your involvement helps our community thrive. I encourage you to consider how you can become more involved, whether it’s by volunteering, sharing our mission with others, participating in our programs, or joining as a new member.

Wishing all of you, and particularly my father, Benjamin Mackoff, who turns 91 this month, a wonderful September filled with health, happiness, and connection.
