THIS IS A CROSSBAR

Becoming a Member

Membership is open to all individuals 50 years of age or older who live east of Rock Creek Park in the Upper Ward 4 communities of Brightwood, Colonial Village, Crestwood, Manor Park, North Portal Estates, Shepherd Park, and Takoma DC. There are two types of membership:

>>Service Membership

Service members pay annual dues to cover the administrative and program costs of providing services and referrals. Even though volunteers provide the services for free, the overhead of running a senior village is substantial. Individual memberships cost $500 per year and household memberships covering two or three people cost $750 per year. Service membership dues are not tax-deductible because members receive benefits in return for the payment of their dues.

>>Social and Basic Membership

Social membership is available to those who would like to join and support ERCV, as well as have access to the social events and programs, but who do not need services. Annual dues are the same as regular ERCV memberships: $500 per year for individuals and $750 for households of two or three. Because ERCV is a registered 501(c)(3) organization the dues may be listed as a charitable deduction in preparation of federal and DC income tax returns.

Social members may attend all social programming, such as coffee chats with the executive director, dine-arounds at local restaurants, happy hours, monthly speaking events, and our annual fundraisers.

Although social members cannot join or renew for multiple years, they may renew annually as often as they like. As long as no services are taken, their membership is mostly tax deductible. However, should the need arise, they can convert from social to service membership for that membership year at no additional cost.

Basic membership dues are $200 for individuals ($350 for a household). This level of membership enjoys the same benefits as social membership except that conversion to a service membership would require paying additional dues to match the service membership dues. The ERCV Treasurer can give details on membership conversion.

>>Give the Gift of the Village!

Looking for a Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift? Do you have a loved one or friend who would thrive with our Village? Consider giving the gift of membership! Membership opens the doors to community resources and connections that can enrich the lives of our neighbors.

Is East Rock Creek Village Right for You?

>>Are you retired and seeking to meet new people and get involved in new activities?

ERCV membership gives you access to a monthly calendar of events and activities from book club gatherings to dine-arounds at area restaurants to lectures and museum visits to walking groups. ERCV volunteer opportunities can lead to new friendships and fulfilling activities.

>>Are you getting older and do you want occasional help to stay in your own home?

ERCV members get in-home assistance with chores, such as changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, help with de-cluttering, closet cleaning, and simple handyman tasks; referrals to Home Care Assistance professionals; transportation to and from appointments of any sort; technical advice and assistance with computers, TVs, and other electronic equipment.

>>Are you single and living alone?

ERCV members, whether service or social, have access to village sponsored cultural, educational, and social programs with opportunities to meet new people who share your interests. Service members receive help with household tasks that may seem daunting when tackled alone.

>>Do you need help with routine tasks that you don’t want to bother your friends and family with?

ERCV members can arrange transportation to the grocery store, to the doctor’s office, to the mall, or to church on Sundays. The best part is that the volunteer will accompany you to the grocery store and help when you return home with putting your groceries away if you desire. And you will not get stranded at your initial destination because you are allowed to book your trip to and from your destination with the village office in advance of your scheduled trip. Members may receive regular phone calls or friendly visits from other members or volunteers so that you are checking on one another rather than worrying a family member.

>>Are you interested in attending educational talks and hearing about programs to help as we grow older?

ERCV members have regular opportunities to attend lectures and talks, as well as engage in discussions on aging and retirement, and have access to low-cost or free classes at venues such as Iona House.

>>Have you recently moved to a community in upper Ward 4, east of Rock Creek Park?

If you are new to the upper Ward 4 area and are 50 or older, ERCV membership can provide opportunities for you to meet your new neighbors through book clubs, lectures, potluck suppers or walking groups. ERCV service members also receive referrals to vetted professional services such as electricians, plumbers, and roofers. ERCV membership can also provide information on local resources, such as the public library programs at the Juanita Thornton and Takoma branches of the DC public library, and programs provided by local civic organizations.

Is East Rock Creek Village Worth the Membership Fee?

Although ERCV was brand-new when it opened in January of 2016, we have been learning the lessons provided by the many other senior villages in the nation’s capital. For the last three years, ERCV’s energetic board of directors has been exchanging and gathering information from neighboring villages through our membership in the Washington Area Village Exchange (WAVE).

Based upon what we have learned, ERCV service members will realize substantial savings in the following areas:

  • Transportation - ERCV service members get free rides to grocery and other stores, medical appointments, ERCV activities and events, and other destinations. Cab fare to and from the doctor’s office can run $20 for a single visit and a drive to the airport, also available to ERCV members, can cost from $20 to $60 round-trip depending upon which airport you are going to and whether you take a shuttle service, cab, or the Metro. In other words, if you are paying for 2 cab rides a week or 8 cab rides a month now, you would be better off putting your money toward a service membership with East Rock Creek Village.
  • Computer/Technical Services - ERCV service members get free computer help from village volunteers with setting up new computers, teaching members how to use programs such as Facebook or Skype. Private companies that provide computer assistance routinely charge $100 per hour.
  • Gardening Advice and Referrals to Landscapers - ERCV service members can get free gardening advice from village volunteers and can get referrals to vetted third-party providers for installations of landscaping. Many area nurseries offer free gardening advice if you buy their plants or travel out to their nurseries, however, ERCV volunteers come to you. Professional landscapers can charge from $150 to $300 for just one visit or just to produce a landscaping plan.
  • Home Assistance or Handyman Services - ERCV service members get free help with household chores like changing light bulbs, getting rid of clutter, organizing paperwork, or simple handyman chores like installing weather stripping. Paying a household organizational service can cost $25 or more an hour and handyman services can run from $20 to $50 an hour.
  • Program/Business Discounts - ERCV service members are likely to receive discounts from local area providers of classes, from Tai Chi to pottery to yoga, based upon the experience of other villages. In addition, it is anticipated that members will have access to AARP safe driving seminars organized by the village and those will save individual ERCV members (service and social) up to $90 per year.
  • Temporary convenience services - ERCV service members who need to go out of town or who are temporarily disabled or injured can arrange with village volunteers to collect their mail and newspapers while they are away and to put out garbage cans or provide pet care. Concierge and pet-care services can run from $25 to $50 a day.
  • Other Monetary Benefits for Village Members - a free subscription to “Washington Checkbook” and its online service.
  • Bottom Line - even if you use only a few of ERCV’s services and offerings, your savings can be substantial. More importantly, you are supporting an institution that will be there for you and your neighbors when you need it.
